General Information
-
What is StEOP?
All exams of the introductory and orientation period (StEOP) have to be passed in order for you to be able to register for other exams or courses with continuous assessment. There is one module examination for part 1 and one module examination for part 2 of the StEOP.
However, attendance of all courses preparing for the StEOP module examinations is voluntary. For your grade, and thus the obtainment of ECTS, only the result of the module examinations counts. After you have passed the module examinations, the StEOP is completed.
The examinations in the introductory and orientation period can be repeated three times. If the fourth attempt is negative, you will be blocked from the respective study for one year. After that you will have four more tries.
-
What does pi/npi mean?
Pi - courses:
courses with continuous assessment where attendance is obligatory. The assessment is based on several (!) written and/or oral performances during the course.
Npi - courses:
courses without continuous assessment where attendance is voluntary. The assessment is based on only one (!) written or oral performance.

Where can I find Room/ Lecture Hall XY?
You can find an overview of the lecture halls of the Faculty of Physics here.
The second digit of the room designations of Boltzmanngasse 5 indicates the floor: e. g. room 3248 is located on the second floor.
-
How can I change my UE group?
Please contact the lecturer of the course. The lecturer decides whether or not you can change the group for the course and has to send an email to the SSC with a request for a group change including your name and matriculation number.
-
Who can help me regarding problems with the “Kreuzerlliste”?
Please contact the respective lecturer. The SSC has no access to the “Kreuzerlliste”.
-
What can I do if I want to withdraw from a course/exam after the end of the cancellation period?
For lectures (npi) registrations and deregistrations are not compulsory, therefore a deregistration is not necessary.
For courses with continuous assessment (pi) or exams it is not possible to deregister after the on U:Space anounced deadline.
A late deregistration can be carried out by the lecturer of the course or the examiner, as the case may be, by providing proof of a valid reason (medical confirmation, ÖBB confirmation etc.) via U:Space.
Further information can be found in the Statute of the University of Vienna.
Exams
-
What are the characteristics of a module/course exam?
Module examination: A module examination is an examination on the learning outcomes of a module specified in the curriculum in the form of a single examination. According to the physics curricula all module exams are written exams.
For module examinations of the introductory and orientation period (StEOP), two examination dates per semester are offered in any case. For module examinations, three examination dates (at the beginning, in the middle and the end of) every semester are offered.
Course examination: A course examination serves the purpose of examining the knowledge and skills acquired in a course without continuous assessment.
Examination dates are offered for the semester in which the course is held after its completion as well as at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the next semester of the course.
-
Where do I register for exams?
-
Where can I find the (de-)registration deadlines for examinations?
(De-)registration deadlines for examinations can be found in u:find.
-
I’ve got difficulties registering for a specific examination, what can I do?
Solutions for possible problems with the registration can be found here.
-
How often can I repeat an exam?
- Failed examinations can be repeated up to three times. The fourth attempt is an examination with an examination committee. You can apply for an examination before an examination committee already at your third attempt.
- A successfully passed examination can be repeated once within 12 months. If you repeat a successfully passed examination, the old grade is invalidated and the new grade counts.
-
Do I have to register to the PUE/PVU for fulfilling the module?
The PUE is not a requirement for registering to the module exam, which you have to pass in order to fulfill the module. But since the contents that are teached within the PUE are tested at the module exam, joining the PUE is highly recommended.
-
I didn't pass the PUE. Do I have to retry?
The module is fulfilled with passing the module exam, so you don't have to pass the PUE.
pi courses
-
Why am I on the waiting list despite a high percentage of my "Studienpfad"?
If you register for two courses but their schedules overlap, the system will assign you to one of the two courses. You will be placed on the waiting list for the other course due to the overlap.
As a next step, we recommend that you attend the first session of the course on the waiting list and be present at the preliminary discussion with the lecturer. The lecturer will decide whether or not you can join the course.
-
I am not registered for a UE/PUE/VU/SE. Can I still take part?
No.
-
I have registered for a pi course. Eventhough I was never there, I still received a grade. Why?
As soon as you have attended the pi course once, you need to get a grade. That is why you need to deregister within the deregister period from this course if you do not want to take the course!
-
I was registered for a pi course but now I was deregistered. Why?
During the very first session of pi (=prüfungsimmanente) courses (this is usually the kick-off event where all important information is given) attendance is mandatory. If you are absent without notifying the course instructor beforehand, you will be deregistered and students from the waiting list get the possibility to get a spot in the course.
-
In my examination record there is a block "Nicht curriculumsrelevante prüfungsvorbereitende Übungen" (= exam preperation courses not relevant for the curriculum). What is that?
In this block you will find all grades of PUEs or PVUs. These courses are exam preparation courses and need to be graded. However, they are not relevant for the fulfillment of the curriculum.
Bachelor Physics
-
What does the StEOP consist of?
The StEOP Physics consists of the following modules:
- StEOP1 Introduction to Physics I 10 ECTS
- StEOP2 Introduction to Computational Methods in Physics 5 ECTS
You have to complete the 15 ECTS credits by passing 2 module examinations.
-
How often can I do the Supplementary Seminar STEP and use it in the record of examinations?
In theory, you can do the Supplementary Seminar STEP as often as you like. However, you may not use it as often as you like in the record of examinations for the completion of your studies. You can use the seminar as follows:
- Bachelor Physics: 1x Supplementary Seminar STEP I (winter) and 1x Supplementary Seminar STEP II (summer) in the module P15 Soft Skills.
- Master Physics: 1x Supplementary Seminar STEP I (winter) and 1x Supplementary Seminar STEP II (summer) in the module MaP3 Soft Skills.
Another combination (e.g. 2x Supplementary Seminar STEP I/winter) is not possible!
-
Are there any formal guidelines for the bachelor’s thesis?
No. The form of the thesis is agreed upon individually with the lecturer of the course.
-
Do I have to hand in a copy of my bachelor’s thesis at the SSC?
No. The submission of the completed confirmation form, signed by the lecturer of the course, is sufficient.
-
How do I enter the course in which I wrote my bachelor’s thesis into the record of examinations?
The bachelor’s thesis can be written in a Laboratory from the elective module block Laboratory III or a seminar of the elective module block Matter and Fields.
The course has to be entered into the record of examinations in the respective module. In addition, the title of the course is entered in the section "bachelor’s thesis". The date and grade are the same as for the course.
