The Directors of Studies are responsible for organisational and legal tasks and are therefore the central contact for students. An advisory body - a study conference – was set up to continuously monitor and optimise the organisation of the study programme. The conference members are made up of half students and half teachers. Among other things, the Directors of Studies perform the following tasks:

  • information and counselling services (with the ÖH and the counselling institutions of the University of Vienna)
  • issuing of degree certificates and diploma supplements
  • recognition of examinations, pre-approvals, formation of examination senates, etc.
  • assessment for admission to studies
  • planning and organisation of the curriculum and examinations for one or more studies (study plan/ curriculum)
  • quality assurance in the field of study and teaching

Appointment

The Directors of Studies are appointed by the Rectorate on a proposal from the Dean (after consultation of the Senate and the Faculty Conference). The term of office lasts two years, reappointments are possible. Academic staff members of the University of Vienna can be appointed Director of Studies if they are appropriately qualified in research and teaching. In order to fulfil their tasks as Directors of Studies, they are partly exempt from their obligations in research and teaching.
